Call for Nominations - ALSA Education Officer


ALSA Education is seeking a competent, experienced and enthusiastic Education Officer to oversee assigned aspects of ALSA’s education activities, ensuring the organisation’s image is upheld while maintaining a strong presence within the media and Higher Education sector in Australia.

Reporting directly to the Vice‐President Education, and as a member of the national ALSA Committee, the successful applicant will work alongside an existing Education Officer.

The successful applicant will be responsible for revising large portions of ALSA’s Higher Education Policy document to present a substantially updated document to Council in July 2011.

He or she will also work with various Working Parties in order to complete major projects in the policy areas of Regional, Remote & Regional, Pro Bono and Community Practice, Curriculum Review, Depression and Mental Health and Recruitment.

Importantly, the new Education Officer will be responsible for enhancing the presentation and research of the ALSA submissions, managing public relations and driving media engagement for the organisation.

Key responsibilities:

  • -Revising ALSA Higher Education Policy document to bring into line outdated information and set a case for ALSA’s policy position on relevant issues today and into the future.
  • -Overseeing the portfolio’s external engagement with specified Working Parties, ensuring the organisation engages Council members regularly through various mediums;
  • -Ensuring all portfolio projects are delivered on time for soft launch dates in the coming months and before ALSA July Conference 2011.
  • -Supporting the Vice‐President Education where needed.

  • -Organisational and leadership skills with the ability to plan, coordinate, and execute tasks and projects through to completion. Success in this area can be attributed to meeting deadlines, balancing competing demands and rigorous attention to detail;
  • -Versatility, flexibility, enthusiasm and a high level of self‐motivation and initiative, both independently and as part of a team;
  • -Computer literacy with advanced knowledge of and experience using Microsoft Office software;
  • -Strong interpersonal skills including tact, discretion and an ability to deal with confidential information; and
  • -The ability to work with limited direction to initiate procedures, set priorities and manage tasks.

Important Information:
This position is voluntary. Tenure by appointment at the discretion of the ALSA Executive is for a period of approximately 3 months until 31 July 2011. Tenure begins immediately after appointment.

Extension beyond this time is not guaranteed and is based on successful election during the ALSA 2011 AGM during ALSA July Conference 2011. After 31 July 2011, the tenure will be for 12 months, like all other Committee positions.

Eligible applicants must be Australian law students at the time of application. It is important that applicants are able to dedicate approximately 8 hours to ALSA work on a weekly basis. Contact with the ALSA Executive and Committee during tenure can be largely fulfilled at home with regular teleconference/Skype meetings weekly.
