The Australian Law Students’ Association’s (ALSA) 2010 Conference is going green. In an environmentally friendly move, the 2010 Conference will offset all carbon emissions resulting in the first carbon neutral function hosted by ALSA. The calculations for the offsets were performed according to datasets provided by the Australian Greenhouse Office’s 2008 ‘ClimateClever’ website, Canopy and the Department of Climate Change. The offset will be absorbed over time and eventually sequestered permanently in a biodiverse carbon sink revegetation program. Greening Australia will begin planting in the winter of 2010 on degraded farmland at Morella station, 5 km south of Salt Creek near the Coorong, South Australia. The ALSA Conference will be spending approximately $4500 to facilitate this initiative. President of the Australian Law Students’ Association, Jonathan Augustus, says “the Federal Government's Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts has acknowledged that a sustainable future cannot be created without considering and involving young people. As one of Australia's leading youth organisations, ALSA is taking the initiative by acting in an environmentally friendly manner whilst organising our activities, releasing our publications and hosting our events. ALSA is committed to promoting long term cultural change amongst our generation in order to protect the environment for future generations. ALSA’s partnership with the Australian Youth Climate Coalition exemplifies this”. The Australian Law Students’ Association 2010 Conference will be co-hosted by Flinders University, the University of South Australia and the University of Adelaide from 12-18 July.
