The National Essay Competition (NEC) is open to all Australian law students. The competition welcomes academic papers on any legal issue between 3,000 and 12,000 words. The best entry will win $1,000! The top four papers will also receive national exposure in the 2012 Australian Law Students’ Association Academic Journal which is distributed to all Australian law student societies.

Eligibility Requirements:
- Entrants must be currently enrolled in an approved Australian law degree.
Essay Requirements:
- Essays must contain no less than 3,000 words and no more than 12,000 words
- Title Page containing:
- Essay Title
- Abstract max 250 words
- Accurate Word Count
- Personal Contact Details
Judging Criteria:
- Presentation & Format
- Style of Writing (emphasis on plain English)
- Substantive Argument
- Originality
- Contribution of the Essay to the appropriate field of knowledge
