ALSA Conference Sydney Bound for 2011

04/02/2011. The Australian Law Students’ Association (ALSA) annual Conference will be hosted by the University of New South Wales in Sydney, July 8-15 2011. Matthew Floro, ALSA President said, “The ALSA 2011 Conference is the largest law student event in Australia, and one of the largest student-run conferences annually, attracting over 600 delegates from across Australia, New Zealand, England and neighbouring Asian countries.”

The Conference began in 1973 as an opportunity for law students from different states to moot against each other. This year the Conference will host six national legal competitions including the Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Moot, the Sir Laurence Street Negotiation competition, the National Moot Competition, as well as the national finals for Client Interviewing, Paper Presentation, and Witness Examination. The grand finals for each competition will be held inside the historic Banco Court of Sydney.

The Conference will also boast an Equity Breakfast and several Speakers’ Forums, attracting the best speakers in their fields. Diverse topics of interest to law students and the wider community will be covered. This year’s line-up will include “Regulating the Internet: A Legal Catastrophe?”, “Homosexuality and the Changing Law”, and “Alternative Careers: What can your law degree do for you?”.

Sydney’s social calendar also showcases this week in July with an Opening and Closing Gala to be hosted at marquee Sydney venues: the Hilton Hotel and Doltone House. Delegates will also enjoy Sydney and its surrounds with day trips and evening events (cocktail evening, bar crawl and theme party) all on offer. Delegates will stay at the Sebel Surry Hills for the duration of the Conference.

Adding even more value for delegates, ALSA will hold the inaugural ALSA Careers Fair, packaged with a brunch for stu¬dents to mingle with employers in an informal setting. In addition, delegates can attend mental health & wellbeing and careers workshops to give them the upper hand in coping and succeeding with their studies and careers.

“The ALSA 2011 Conference is looking to be a memorable event that will allow delegates to get as much as possible out of their law degree, and I encourage all Australian law students to consider attending,” Mr Floro said.
