John Corcoran, President of the Law Council of Australia, recently gave his "State of the Profession" address at the 36th Australian Legal Convention in Perth. Within this address he touched on the expectations and career perspectives of current law graduates, and referred to ALSA in his remarks. "To fully harness emerging talent within the legal profession, we need to appreciate the career perspectives of today’s young lawyers. According to the Australian Law Students' Association (ALSA), anecdotal evidence indicates that, unlike generations that have gone before them, today’s law graduates see the world as one, large, ever-shrinking market. They don’t feel restricted to working in one jurisdiction and have few qualms about moving their career within Australia or around the world. Furthermore, gone are the days when firms sign up graduates for life. ALSA believes today’s law graduates and young lawyers don’t view anything they do during the first 10 years of their career as anything but a stepping stone to something bigger and better. The legal profession must cater to these needs." For a transcript of Jorn Corcoran's entire speech, please click here. |
